It occurred to me over the years whilst building my droids that there are a few distinct types of build based on a mixture of resources.

I then decided to document the different types to help you decide where to head and make the right choice about your DIY R2D2 from day one.

Types of R2D2; Build classifications

  • Type 1 - Metal - The ultimate build from CNC milled aluminium parts (club spec) (£5,000+)
  • Type 2 - Scale Composite - made from composites and accurate scale (club spec) (£1500+)
  • Type 3 - Scale Budget - again made from a mix of parts, some 1:1 and some adapted (£500)
  • Type 4 - Budget - made from home made items that are as near as possible but vary in size (£150)
  • Stages of R2D2 sophistication

  • Level A - Autonomous - Most of B, Speech recognition, motion detection, radar navigation, autonomous interaction and navigation
  • Level B - Semi-autonomous - Most of C plus facial recognition, motion detection, simple navigation but primarily RC
  • Level C - Animated model - RC, Motorised, 3-2-3 leg movement, additional functionality, animated dome segments etc
  • Level D - Static model - Working lights, holos, logics, sounds
  • Level E - Budget - zero electronics to simple lights

Hi, I dont have a complete set. what happens is you have to collect each plan for each bit from various sites. The best ones are astromech.net under blueprints at the top of the site and r2-r9.com. Sadly there are still some plans missing which I do have and will upload here soon.
